New Delhi: An Indian man lashed out at desi employees for faking work to impress their managers, who stay late. Netizens were quick to comment on such practices. They called it an "outdated mindset".
A Redditor shed light on the situation on the social forum. The man claimed that his friend worked for a mid-size IT company where the shifts end at 6:30 pm. However, none of the employees leave their desks until 8 pm, as the manager continues to work till then. The Redditor stated that the employees scroll to make themselves look busy.
In the post, the Redditor stated, "People literally just scroll through Instagram, keep half-heartedly typing, or pretend to be busy. No one wants to be seen leaving 'early' while the boss is still around." The Redditor went on to explain that his friend was frustrated but forced to stay to maintain "visibility".
Indian employees fake work till the manager leaves office; netizens react
"Are other Indian workplaces like this too? Or is this just an outdated mindset we’re still clinging to where long hours = good work, regardless of productivity?" stated the Redditor in conclusion.
Many questioned the unnecessary act. They termed it "self-induced toxicity" and agreed that it is an outdated act that needs to be stopped. Other netizens shared that these practices were widespread in many Indian organisations.
"People stay late just to look like they are working hard, even if their work is done. It's more about showing the boss you are still online, not about doing more work. This needs to change. Work should be about what you finish, not how late you stay," said one. Another person commented, "It's become a culture in India. You are a good worker only if you stay late. I'm a team leader and I always encourage my team to be efficient. Finish off your work on time and close for the day."
