New Delhi: The Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi has issued a passenger advisory and also said that the IndiGo flight operations are now "steadily resuming". The private airlines cancelled nearly 1,000 flights on Friday as the fiasco regarding rostering issues and weather problems continued to plague the carrier.
The IGI Airport authorities said that flight operations were "getting back to normal." But they still advised passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.
In a post on their official 'X' handle, the Delhi Airport said, "We are glad to update that Indigo flight operations are now steadily resuming and getting back to normalcy following the brief disruption. Please check the status of your booking and flight before leaving from home."
The statement comes after all IndiGo flights from the Delhi Airport were cancelled till Friday midnight. The day saw 1,000 cancellations in total, making it one of the worst days for the airline, in the 3 days fiasco.
Meanwhile, following outrage and chaos at airports across India, IndiGo CEO Peter Elbers issued a public statement, regarding the matter. In a video message, he acknowledged the problems of the passengers and said that flight operations would be back to normal between December 10 to December 15.
In the video message, Elbers can be heard saying, "December 5 was the most severely impacted day, with the number of cancellations well over 1000. I extend our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience it has caused to our customers. It will take some time to return to a full normal situation, which we anticipate between 10-15 December."
The Central government also took cognizance of the matter. The Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, blamed mismanagement by the IndiGo airlines as the reason for the flight delays and cancellations across airports in India. He said that the airline could not manage the rostering system of its crew according to the new flight duty time limitation regulations, issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
ANI quoted him as saying, that given the chaos that the airlines was in currently, the Civil Aviation Ministry had decided to grant IndiGo a certain abeyance from FDTL norms to ensure normalcy and aid stranded passengers. He said that other airlines had adjusted their schedules according to the new FDTL norms, but IndiGo could not do so.
The DGCA said that IndiGo "probably misjudged crew requirements and there were also gaps in planning" by the airlines, which led to staff shortage. This has led to the recent chaos, being witnessed at the airports. they added.
