IndiGo suspends Kathmandu flights amid unrest in Nepal
IndiGo on Tuesday suspended all flights to and from Kathmandu until 12 pm on September 10. he airline also issued a travel advisory extending waivers on cancellations and rescheduling for passengers impacted by disruptions.
New Delhi: IndiGo suspended all flights to and from Kathmandu on Tuesday until 12 pm on September 10, due to the closure of Nepal's Tribhuvan Airport amid violent anti-government protests in Nepal. The airline also issued a travel advisory extending waivers on cancellations and rescheduling for passengers impacted by disruptions.
"All flights to and from Kathmandu stand cancelled until 1200 hrs on September 10. If your travel plans are impacted, you may opt for an alternate flight or claim a refund through our website,” IndiGo said in a statement.
The airline added that waivers on cancellations and rescheduling would apply to and from Kathmandu until September 12. It will cover bookings made on or before September 9. IndiGo also said that its teams are closely monitoring developments and will provide timely updates once operations are cleared to resume.
"Our teams remain on standby, closely monitoring developments around the clock, and will continue to share timely updates as soon as operations are cleared to resume. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding. Your safety and peace of mind remain our top priority," the statement read.
The announcement came as Nepal grappled with violence following protests led by young demonstrators, popularly termed the "Gen Z movement." Violence has surged in the capital with at least 19 people killed and more than 500 injured in the clashes, according to reports. Demonstrators torched various government buildings, including the Federal Parliament complex.

Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Monday amid mounting pressure. His departure has thrown Nepal into political uncertainty. In New Delhi, PM Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security and discussed the developments in Nepal, shortly after returning from an aerial survey of flood hit regions in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.
In a post on X, Modi described the situation in Nepal as "heart-rending." "The stability, peace and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us. I humbly appeal to all my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace,” he said.
