New Delhi: Former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has temporarily shifted to a private farmhouse in Delhi's Chhatarpur area as he awaits the official allotment of a government bungalow. The residence, located in Gadaipur, belongs to Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader Abhay Chautala and will serve as Dhankhar's home for the next three months.
Dhankhar, 74, vacated the Vice-President's Enclave near Parliament House earlier today, more than a month after stepping down from the post. As per government protocol, former Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Prime Ministers are entitled to a Type-8 bungalow in Lutyens' Delhi or two acres of land in their ancestral towns. Dhankhar has already been allotted a bungalow at 34 APJ Abdul Kalam Road. Officials from the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) have informed the Vice-President's Secretariat that it will take at least three months to complete repairs and furnishing works before he can move in.
Dhankhar resigned from his post on July 21, the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament due to health reasons. His term as Vice President was originally set to end in August 2027. The election to choose his successor will be held on September 9. NDA nominee and Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan will contest against opposition-backed candidate B Sudershan Reddy, who is a former Supreme Court judge.
Meanwhile, Dhankhar has also applied for pension entitlements from his long political career. He is eligible for three pensions, as a former Vice President, ex-Member of Parliament and former Rajasthan legislator.
Dhankhar served as an MLA from Kishangarh between 1993 and 1998 on a Congress ticket. It entitles him to a monthly pension of Rs 42,000 which includes a 20 per cent increase for those above 70. As a one-term MP representing Jhunjhunu in the Lok Sabha from 1989 to 1991, he is eligible for Rs 45,000 per month. He will also receive pension benefits as a former Vice President. His tenure as West Bengal Governor does not carry any pension benefits but he can avail one secretarial staff for a monthly reimbursement of Rs 25,000 as a former governor.
