New Delhi: Baramulla MP Engineer Rashid, lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail, has alleged that there was an attempt on his life and accused the jail administration of devising "new methods" to harass Kashmiri prisoners.
According to his lawyer Advocate Javeed Hubbi, Rashid claimed that Tihar authorities were deliberately housing eunuchs in their barracks and encouraging them to "provoke, attack and create a hostile environment". Rashid recently met Hubbi and told him that Kashmiri detainees were being targeted systematically.
Hubbi said Rashid narrowly escaped serious injury after a group of inmates pushed and threw a gate on him. "It was a miraculous escape. Had it hit directly, it could have been fatal. This is nothing short of a deliberate attempt to physically harm him," he alleged.
Rashid further alleged that Kashmiri inmates including Ayoub Pathan of Beerwah, Bilal Mir of Qamarwari and Amir Gojri of Srinagar were attacked, while Arshid Tanch of Kupwara was subjected to humiliation. He claimed the harassment peaks during prayers, with deliberate attempts made to disturb detainees offering namaz.
The Baramulla MP further alleged that HIV-positive inmates were intentionally lodged with Kashmiri prisoners and that notorious gangsters in Tihar appeared to be backing a "systematic campaign" against them over the past three months.
Expressing outrage, Rashid's Awami Itihaad Party (AIP) demanded an independent probe, accountability of jail authorities, and immediate guarantees for the safety and dignity of Kashmiri prisoners.
Engineer Rashid has been in Tihar since August 2019 after his arrest by the NIA under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) on charges of providing financial assistance to terrorist activities. Despite being in jail, he contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and won from Baramulla.
