Kanpur scooter blast: Police rule out terror angle, say stockpiling of illegal firecrackers led to explosion

On Wednesday, eight people were injured after two scooters parked in the congested Mishri Bazar near a mosque in in the Moolganj area of Kanpur exploded seconds apart. The explosion also damaged nearby shops.

Kanpur: A day after eight people were injured in a massive blast in Kanpur in Uttara Pradesh, police have ruled out terror conspiracy angle and said that the explosion occurred due to stockpiling of illegal firecrackers.

On Wednesday, eight people were injured after two scooters parked in the congested Mishri Bazar near a mosque in in the Moolganj area of Kanpur exploded seconds apart. The explosion also damaged nearby shops. The blasts occurred Wednesday around 7.30 pm in the crowded Moolganj area. Following the explosion, Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Special Task Force (STF) were roped in to investigate the incident.

Addressing a press conference, Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghuveer Lal said, "There is no terror attack angle in the incident. The CCTV footage showed that the explosive material was kept in a box outside a shop, and the explosion caused the scooter to catch fire. The incident occurred due to piling up of illegal firecrackers."

5 cops suspended, main accused detained

He further said that the main accused, Parvez, and his son have been detained, along with 12 other people and that sear is on for one more suspect - Tariq. Five police officers, including the SHO, have been suspended and ACP was immediately removed for negligence, the Commissioner added.

"Two firecracker warehouses have been sealed and 18 shops were raided. Police are engaged in a crackdown on illegal firecrackers and have seized large number of firecrackers illegally stored in over a dozen shops following an overnight search operation," he said.
