Now, the Karnataka government has officially approved the replacement of the British-era slouch hats worn by constables and head constables. New Delhi: The Karnataka government has officially approved the replacement of the British-era slouch hats worn by constables and head constables with new navy blue peak caps. This decision comes after years of demands from the state police. They have cited health issues associated with the old headgear.
The Karnataka Police Department has used slouch hats since colonial times but officers have long argued that these hats are uncomfortable and cause health issues. They have also said that these hats are impractical during duties such as rallies, protests and investigations. The issue was under discussion for several years, but no consensus was reached so far due to the large existing stock of slouch hats.
Now, the state government has issued an order to proceed with the transition. A tender process has been initiated for the procurement of new caps, and a meeting is held, chaired by the ADGP of Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP), to finalise the design of the caps.
Telangana-style navy blue caps chosen
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara, along with the police officials have reviewed several models and colours from other states before finalising the Telangana model, navy blue peak caps. The Chief Minister inspected the other options before giving the green signal.
It marks an end to a colonial legacy. The new caps, made with elastic to ensure it fits firmly on the head, is expected to improve both comfort and uniformity. The caps will replace the traditional slouch hats which often slipped and were considered disrespectful if dropped.
Health and practical concerns drive the change
According to recent advisories from the Union Health Ministry, prolonged use of slouch hats can lead to health complications. The inconvenience of wearing these hats during important and high mobility duties further led to the push for this change. Police personnel have said that the revamped form of policed hats are more practical.
A glimpse into the history of Karnataka's police caps
The history of police caps in Karnataka dates back over a century to the reign of the Mysore Maharajas. At that time, khaki shirts, half-pants, coloured belts and brown boots were the standard attire. Post independence, these uniforms were retained and minor modifications were adopted. It led to the introduction of full-length trousers and turbans with red and blue designs.
The current slouch hats were introduced during the tenure of former Chief Minister R Gundu Rao (1980-83). It replaced the earlier blue turbans with red stripes for daily duties. Turbans are now only used during ceremonial events like parades.
