New Delhi: The country has witnessed tremendous controversy over Waqf properties in recent times. Now, according to a report by the Indian Express, out of the total 8 lakh Waqf properties, only 2.16 lakh have been registered on the UMEED website.

The officials of the Waqf Board will reportedly approach tribunals after the deadline for the process ended on December 6. The report states that the website got 5.17 lakh registration applications, out of which 10,872 registration applications were rejected.

States with highest registered properties

Karnataka has reportedly registered the most properties at 52,917 (81%). The second place has been grabbed by Jammu & Kashmir with 25,046 (77%), followed by Punjab with 24,969 (90%), and Gujarat with 24,133 (61%). In Maharashtra, 17,971 out of 36,700 properties have been registered (48%).

West Bengal is at the bottom of the list with just 716 properties registered out of 80,480 (0.89%). The ruling TMC government was in a clash with the Centre over the implementation of the Waqf (Amendment) Act. However, it was directed last week to upload information on the UMEED website regarding such properties. In Uttar Pradesh, there have been 789 registrations (5%) for the Shia Waqf Board, and 12,982 (11%) registrations for the Sunni Waqf Board. The only other state with separate Waqf Boards for the two sects is Bihar.

Around three months ago, the Supreme Court passed an interim order on the petition challenging the Waqf Amendment Act. The court noted that there was no need to stay the entire statute, but said that some sections of the Act needed protection. The court stayed the provision in the Waqf Amendment Act 2025 requiring a person to be a practitioner of Islam for 5 years to create a waqf. This stay will continue till the day state governments frame rules to determine whether a person is a practitioner of Islam.

What is the UMEED website?

The full form of UMEED is Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development. The Centre launched the portal on June 6 under provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act to bring all Waqf properties under one digital database to ensure, as per the Centre, the smooth and transparent management and protection of properties. Those who have failed to register within the deadline would not be penalised for three months.
