Dehradun: Helicopter services to Kedarnath Dham resumed today after a three-month hiatus, bringing relief to pilgrims planning the yatra.
However, authorities have clearly stated that flight operations will remain subject to weather conditions, and no permissions will be granted for take-off during bad weather.
UKADA completed all necessary preparations
The Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA) has completed all necessary preparations for the resumption of the heli service. However, officials emphasized that safety remains the top priority, and the helicopters will not be allowed to shuttle if weather conditions are not favorable.
A team reviewed helipads
Before launching the operations, a team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reached Uttarakhand to conduct a thorough inspection of safety protocols and infrastructure. The team reviewed helipads at Guptkashi, Sirsi, and Phata, which are the main points for heli operations to Kedarnath. The inspection included an assessment of the safety standards, pilot credentials, and other technical parameters set by the aviation authority.
Seven helicopters from six different private operators have arrived at the helipads
Seven helicopters from six different private operators have arrived at the helipads in Guptkashi, Sirsi, and Phata to begin operations. The trial flights conducted by the companies were successful, and the service has now received a green signal to commence regular operations—weather permitting.
Flights will be permitted only under suitable weather conditions
UCADA CEO Ashish Chauhan confirmed that the coordination meeting with the DGCA team was positive, and all safety checks have been cleared. “Preparations are complete for operating the Kedarnath helicopter service. However, flights will be permitted only under suitable weather conditions. All helicopter shuttles will be monitored for compliance,” he said. This cautious approach follows the frequent weather fluctuations in Uttarakhand, especially during the post-monsoon period, which have impacted air and road connectivity in the hilly regions.
Helicopter services have become a vital part of the Kedarnath Yatra
In recent years, helicopter services have become a vital part of the Kedarnath Yatra, but safety has remained a concern due to rapidly changing weather, high-altitude conditions, and dense fog that often disrupt visibility. Authorities have urged pilgrims to stay informed about weather alerts and be prepared for delays or cancellations, as the situation will be reviewed on a daily basis.
