Thiruvananthapuram: The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has given a clean chit to cardiology department despite a strong allegation by the family of K Venu, a Kollam-based autorickshaw driver who died at the Trivandrum medical college due to alleged medical negligence. An 11-minute audio clip of Venu had surfaced after his death where he alleged serious lapses on the side of the doctors of the medical college.
The report from the DME comes at a time when the family of Venu had come out with shocking discrepancies from the side of the hospital authorities over providing first aid care and medication.
“If anything happens to me, the hospital staff should be held responsible,” said Venu in the recording. Venu died of heart failure on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, Sindhu, wife of Venu, rubbished the probe report, saying they will not accept it. She reiterated that the family was kept in the dark throughout Venu’s five-day ordeal.
The preliminary report, expected to be submitted to Health Minister Veena George on Monday, claimed that treatment protocols had been followed and the case sheet showed no lapses. The findings were based solely on statements from the doctors involved.
The report noted that “communication errors” with the patient might need separate examination.
“There was clear negligence in treatment and the manner in which they dealt with the patient,” she said.
The health minister had ordered an inquiry following complaints from Venu’s family. Venu’s death sparked a major controversy with various political parties accusing the government of neglecting the public health system. Amid the allegations, calls have intensified for a thorough investigation guided by Supreme Court protocols and involving a multidisciplinary panel of experts.
Meanwhile, a 26-year-old woman died at the SAT hospital in Thiruvananthapuram a day after her delivery. Family of the deceased woman raised serious allegations against the SAT hospital alleging that the woman died at the hospital due to infection while admitted in the hospital.
“11 ventilators at SAT hospital non-functioning”, alleges BJP district president
BJP leader and district president Karamana Jayan alleged that 11 ventilators at the SAT hospital were not functioning for the past 5 days.
“We have been saying that the ventilator was not functioning for the past 5 days, however no one from the hospital bothered to listen.
“It is absolutely shocking that no action has been taken even after raising this issue. There needs to be complete overhaul in the hospital administration”, said Karamana Jayan.
