Kerala government has decided to give priority for Hindi education from schools going forward. This comes at a time when there is political opposition from various south Indian states against the alleged Hindi imposition in academic centres by the central government.
The Kerala government has issued guidelines for quality education with the aim to ensure that students acquire high level skills in Hindi in addition to English and Malayalam.

The directorate of general education has directed the schools to come up with an academic masterplan to enable children to learn Hindi that includes Hindi computing.
Proposed activities include discussions in Hindi and daily classroom conversations. Screening of Hindi films, hosting Hindi theatre and skits, promoting reading of Hindi books, creating Hindi newspapers and also involve more creative writing in Hindi.
The language program will include compulsory learning of Hindi for all students.
"As per the new guidelines that is issued, schools must actively promote sessions that gives room for students to write, read and learn Hindi", said Ravi Kumar, a Hindi teacher at a government aided school in Kollam.
The National Educational Policy (NEP) gives priority to Hindi in addition to English and Malayalam.
Despite opposing NEP in policy terms, Kerala has decided to move forward with the 3-language program.
"Children of migrants are increasingly enrolling in public schools. This will also help the students from other states who have joined in large numbers especially in the schools of south and central Kerala", said Nidheesh, an educationist working in Thiruvananthapuram.
Meanwhile, the education department has stated that they do not support the imposition of Hindi, but will continue to support the learning of Hindi.
