Kerala LSG polls: Political controversy erupt after IUML candidate elopes with BJP activist in Kannur

Following the candidate missing, a major political stand-off took place in the region between the LDF activists and the UDF activists. CPM leaders criticised the IUML leadership for not able to coordinate with their declared candidate and allow her to campaign in the constituency.

Kannur: It turned out to be a strange ‘political alliance’ in Chokli Panchayat in Kannur, a village in north Kerala where the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) candidate eloped with a BJP local leader two days before the polling date.

The incident came to light on December 9th when the party members and colleagues of the IUML woman candidate tried to reach out to her through phone and was found that her mobile was switched off.

The couple later voluntarily reached the Chokli police station and informed that they were planning to get married. They were later produced before the magistrate court and let off.

Following the candidate missing, a major political stand-off took place in the region between the LDF activists and the UDF activists. CPM leaders criticised the IUML leadership for not able to coordinate with their declared candidate and allow her to campaign in the constituency.

Meanwhile, the UDF alleged that the CPM is trying to split the votes in the constituency where a triangular political fight was underway.

The IUML local leadership alleged that the CPM had forcefully moved the IUML candidate to an isolate location. However, CPM leadership denied all the allegations made.

Later the family members of the IUML candidate filed a complaint with the police. In the police investigation it was found that the candidate had eloped with a BJP local leader. Both were produced before the magistrate court by the police.

The IUML candidate were active in the election campaigning for the past 3 weeks in the region.

When tried to contact the IUML leadership in Kannur, they refused to comment on the matter.
