Pathanamthitta: The first phase of evidence collection of Rahul Mamkoottathil in connection with the rape case was completed as the police team took Rahul to the hotel room that was identified by the victim in Thiruvalla town.
During the evidence collection procedure, the Palakkad MLA who had earlier been with the Congress party has agreed to the probe team that he had met the survivor in the hotel room. However, he has not reacted when asked about assaulting the victim.
The MLA had entered his name as BR Rahul while booking the room in April 2025. As per police sources, the MLA did not cooperate with the probe team as he refused to reply to the rest of the questions. The police team had reached the hotel where Rahul stayed at 5:40 am. There was a huge crowd comprising of party workers from the CPM and the BJP who gathered at the hotel premises.
The legislator was taken back to the AR camp after the evidence collection procedure.
Police sources say that Rahul was not cooperating with the probe as he was evading the questions that was asked by the team.
The Thiruvalla magistrate court had sent him to police custody on Tuesday. Rahul’s bail plea will be heard by the court on January 16.
During the hearing, the defense counsel argued that the bail petition to be considered before the hearing the custodial request by the prosecution. However, the court refused to hear the bail plea and had directed the police to take the accused for evidence collection.
Rahul Mamkoottathil was arrested in connection with a third rape allegation that was made against him. In the first two cases being registered, the MLA secured bail from the Kerala high court, however in the third case the police managed to get him under custody for interrogation.
The survivor has told the police that Rahul had allegedly raped her at a hotel in April 2024 after promising to marry her. However, Rahul later retracted on the promise and started threatening messages.
