Second phase of 9700-crore Vizhinjam seaport construction to begin on Jan 24; To be completed by 2028
In the second phase, the port's capacity will increase from 1 million TEU to 5 million TEU. The berth will be expanded from 800 meters to 2,000 meters. The breakwater will be expanded from 3 km to 4 km. Further, new facilities such as a railway yard, multipurpose berth, liquid terminal, and a tank farm will be set up.
Thiruvananthapuram: In a major milestone towards marking another milestone in the development of Kerala and the nation, the second phase of construction and development of the Vizhinjam international port will officially commence on January 24, bringing in an investment to the tune of ₹9,700 crore by the port concessionaire Adani Vizhinjam Port Pvt. Ltd.
The first phase of development of the public-private-partnership (PPP) port project has seen an investment of around ₹8,867 crore, with the Kerala government chipping in around ₹5,595 crore (63%) for infrastructure, while Adani Ports contributed roughly ₹2,500 crore (28%).
Addressing a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday (January 22, 2026), Mr. Vasavan said the second phase works would be completed by 2028.
He said that within a year of the port’s commencement of operations, it has demonstrated "excellent operational performance” by handling 1.513 million TEUs containers from 710 vessels. "Within this short period, the port has been able to start direct services to major ports across Europe, America, Africa and Asia. The port has already become an important link in the global seaborne cargo movement and a strategic trade gateway for South Asia,” he said.

In the second phase, the port’s capacity will increase from 1 million TEU to 5 million TEU. The berth will be expanded from 800 meters to 2,000 meters. As per the master plan, the total investment in the second phase is ₹Rs 9,700 crore. By the time the second phase of development is completed, the EXIM gateway cargo movement, along with container movement by road, will also be possible, said the Minister.
The construction of the second phase of the development works will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at 4 p.m. The function, to be presided over by State Ports Minister V. N. Vasavan, will be attended by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, who is the chief guest.
