Suicide of 23-year-old Sona : Police recover suicide letter revealing attempt to forceful religious conversion

Kothamangalam: Police probing the death of a 23-year-old girl in Kothamangalam on August 10 has revealed that the girl died by suicide after she was forced to convert to Islam and was tortured by her boyfriend named Rameez Mohammed. Police say that he is being questioned after the suicide letter that was found near her body has revealed shocking details of the torture he had undergone in the past few days.

Sona, daughter of late Eldhose and Bindu, was found hanging in the bedroom of her residence at Karukadam on Saturday. She was rushed to a hospital in Kothamangalam where she was declared dead at 2.43 pm, according to the FIR.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death. A suicide note, kept on the bed, was recovered from the room in which she raised allegations of harassment and forced religious conversion against Rameez. Her mother, Bindu, is a housemaid, and her brother, Basil, is employed as a driver. Sona was a second-year TTC student at Muvattupuzha. Rameez, a resident of Aluva and Sona were in a relationship according to Sona's family. Talks of marriage were going on, they said. The police have seized Sona's phone and are analysing chat history and other digital evidence.

Meanwhile, Sona’s brother has made serious allegations against the family of the accused stating that Rameez and family have physically and mentally tortured Sona and had forced her to convert her faith to Islam.

The family has demanded an investigation into the matter.
