New Delhi: Japan is all set to introduce its latest E10 series Shinkansen bullet trains in India by 2030. The trains are part of the Ahmedabad-Mumbai High Speed Railway project in India. The deal for the technology was finalised during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Japan on August 29-30, 2025. The deal is seen as the centerpiece of India-Japan cooperation.
Initially India planned to buy the E5 Shinkansen series. But the project got delayed considerably and by then Japan came up with the next generation E10 series. So now India will get this new improved version of bullet trains technology.
The design of the E10 is inspired by the famous sakura, or cherry blossom, flowers and includes at least one key upgrade - the train is earthquake-proof. Not only that the design of the E-10 series of bullet trains is such that it ensures that the train does not derail during an earthquake. The trains are designed with lateral dampers to reduce shaking, minimise damage and, again, prevent derailment.
Other features in E10 series which were not there in the earlier version include, more space for luggage, dedicated window seats for wheelchair users, and a re-designed, flexible seating plan that can be set up either for more passengers or more cargo.
The trains have been designed at the East Japan Railway Company. These E10 bullet trains can reach up to a maximum speed of 320 kilometers per hour. This is the same as the E5 series. However the new feature in the E10 series of bullet trains is that their speed is limited electronically. Apart from that these trains also have wider seats and a special business class with leather recliner seats. A built-in desk and onboard Wifi is also provided for the passengers.
The E10 series also has improved brakes, which help stop the trains from its top speed in less than 3.4 kilometres compared to the four kilometres that the E5 needs. Apart from that these trains have better engines and in future may switch to fully automatic operations.
The E10 trains will start operating in India by 2030. Till then the country has offered to give India one E5 and one E3 bullet train. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train operations are expected to commence in 2027 and will probably see an E5 bullet train operation.
Through the E10 series, the Indian government aims to provide its citizens a train which has high speed, improved efficiency and which enhances passenger safety.
PM Narendra Modi is currently on a 2-day visit to Japan. Japan has set an ambitious goal to invest USD 67 billion in private sector investments in India, during the PM's visit. As far as bullet train technology is concerned, PM Modi visited the factory where E10 is being developed.
