New Delhi: In a horrifying revelation, Manojit Mishra, the main accused in the gangrape case of a 24-year-old law student at South Calcutta Law College, reportedly filmed the crime to prevent any complaint by the victim. Commonly called as "Mango", Manojit was confident that the survivor would not approach the police if he filmed the crime and this way he could silence the law student.

Manojit, a former student who was working on a contractual basis at the college, allegedly conspired with two current students, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, to sexually assault the victim. The police suspected that the act was premeditated.

According to reports, Manojit was aware that the survivor had suffered a panic attack during the ordeal, and instead of offering help, he gave her an inhaler to revive her so that the assault could continue.

'Mango' asked others to monitor victim

Manojit had allegedly asked some friends to keep an eye on the Kasba Police Station, about a kilometre from the college, to check whether the survivor registered a complaint, an NDTV report quoted top Kolkata police officials as saying.

The next day, Manojit called a college staff member and asked if the police had visited the campus. When he realised that the cops were after him, he contacted his lawyer friends and college seniors for help, but no one intervened.

On the evening of June 26, Manojit and Zaib met on Fern Road, near Ballygunge Railway Station, about 1.5 kilometres from the college campus. Police apprehended the duo later that evening. Pramit was arrested at his house that night.

Manojit has reportedly told police that Pramit and Zaib recorded videos of him raping the survivor, and they were confident that she would not file a report for fear of the video being circulated. The police investigation also revealed that the survivor had been in Manojit's crosshairs since the day she started college.

Past record includes multiple harassment complaints

In a statement to the police, Manojit allegedly expressed no remorse, stating that he was certain she would not report the crime due to the existence of the video evidence. His past record includes multiple cases of molestation and harassment, yet he continued to operate freely within the college premises.

Police have reportedly found multiple pieces of evidence near the crime scene where the student was sexually assaulted. The rape allegedly took place in a room used by the college security guard. Bedsheets recovered from the scene have been sent for forensic analysis.
