Shimla: The monsoon has brought severe destruction to Himachal Pradesh, with continuous rain causing landslides and flash floods in many parts of the state. So far, more than 230 roads have been closed and essential services like electricity and water supply have also been badly affected.
According to official data, 81 power distribution transformers and 61 water supply schemes have stopped working due to the ongoing rain. Among the closed roads, 121 are in Mandi, 23 in Kullu, and 13 in Sirmaur. The popular highway NH-707 near Hevna in Sirmaur has also been shut down due to a landslide.
The situation is particularly worse in Mandi, Kangra, and Kullu districts, which have seen the most damage in terms of roads, infrastructure, and loss of life. On July 19 alone, 153 roads were closed in Mandi and 39 in Kullu.
So far, the state has reported 116 deaths due to monsoon-related incidents. Out of these, 68 people died in direct disasters like landslides, flash floods, and house collapses, while 48 people lost their lives due to weather-related causes like poor visibility and slippery roads. The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) also said that 199 people have been injured and 35 people are missing.
India Meteorological Department has issued orange and yellow alerts for heavy rain in various districts over the next three days. A yellow alert is currently in place till Sunday, asking people to stay safe and avoid risky areas, especially near rivers and hilly regions.
Since the start of the monsoon season, Himachal Pradesh has faced 31 flash floods, 22 cloudbursts, and 19 landslides. The estimated loss to the state so far is over Rs 1,220 crore.
Rescue and relief efforts are going on in full swing. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the local administration are working together to restore roads, repair damaged structures, and help affected people.
