New Delhi: Parents of a resident doctor, Rameezuddin, at Lucknow's iconic King George’s Medical University (KGMU) were arrested by the police on charges related to the alleged forcible religious conversion, The Indian Express reported.
According to the police, the case involves the alleged conversion of a resident doctor at Agra Medical College for marriage, as well as an attempt to force a KGMU resident doctor to convert so she could marry their son.
The parents, Salimuddin (70) and Khadija (60), were taken into police custody after questioning, the police were quoted as saying in the report. They resided in a rented house in the Old City area in Lucknow.
Police have also raised the reward on the absconding doctor from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000.
DCP Vishwajeet Srivastava told Indian Express that the arrests were carried out after both victims recorded their statements before a magistrate. They had alleged the parents’ role in coercing them to convert and causing a miscarriage.
Rameezuddin has been booked for sexually exploiting the two victims, apart from facing charges of conversion and forcible miscarriage, the DCP said.
Police said that during the questioning of the parents, the names of a Muslim cleric who allegedly performed the nikah and a witness came to light. Officials said their roles are being verified to find out whether they should be named as accused in the case.
Police teams have been fanned across several places to trace the resident doctor after obtaining a non-bailable warrant. Police have also decided to approach the court seeking directions to attach Rameezuddin's property.
Police have carried out raids at his residence in Uttarakhand and his ancestral home in Pilibhit but have yet to gather any leads about his whereabouts.
The accused doctor had earlier been suspended by the medical university after his colleague at KGMU, on December 23, registered a complaint. Police had booked the accused under BNS sections 69, 89 and 351 apart from religious conversion charges.
