New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday urged the people of India to help the country get rid of colonial mentality in the next ten years. He also observed that every sector in India in currently shedding the mindset of colonial mentality.
Addressing an event in the national capital, the prime minister said that the term Hindu rate of growth was used when India was struggling for 2-3 per cent of growth. The PM further noted that linking the country’s economic performance with the people was not at all a coincidence.
“I am requesting the people of our nation to look at the coming ten years as a clear time frame. I cannot achieve this without your support. The policy of Macaulay that sowed the seeds of mental slavery in India will complete two hundred years in 2035. This is why, within these ten years, we must free ourselves from every trace of that colonial mindset,” PM Modi said at the event.
He added, “The term Hindu rate of growth was used at a time when Bharat struggled even to reach a growth rate of two to three percent. Linking a country’s economic performance to the faith of its people was no coincidence. It was in fact a symbol of the colonial mindset. An entire society was reduced to a synonym for poverty.”
Addressing the gathering, the PM noted that the second quarter growth of 8 percent suggested the momentum of India’s current growth. “The second quarter GDP figures for India show growth of more than 8%, reflecting a new momentum in our progress. These are clear macroeconomic signals that India is emerging as a major growth driver in the global economy. Global growth is around 3 per cent, while the G7 economies are growing at an average of about 1.5 per cent. At such a time, India stands out as a model of high growth and low inflation,” he added.
