New Delhi: A major road accident was reported from Lonavala in Pune. This is a popular tourist destination in the state. The accident happened when a truck and a car collided head-on with each other. Pictures from the accident site showed that the front portion of the car was completely damaged in the accident.
The police have confirmed that 2 people died in the accident at Lonavala in Pune. Rescue teams reached the site soon after getting information about the accident. The accident reportedly took place near the famous Lion's Point, which is a popular tourist spot in Lonavala. The deceased were reportedly residents of Goa and were on a trip to Lonovala, said a report in the Free Press Journal. They were driving a Maruti Suzuki Swift car with registration number GA 03 AM 0885.
Efforts are on to identify the deceased and contact their families. Once contact is established, further legal processes would be initiated, said the police team.
While the front portion of the car was completely mangled, the truck was not severely damaged, shown pictures from the accident site. The driver of the car was killed in the accident. While both occupants of the car died on the spot, the truck driver was only injured in the accident. He is receiving treatment at the hospital. His condition is said to be stable.
A case has been registered against the truck driver at the Lonavala City Police Station. He will be questioned, once he is out of the hospital.
This is however not the first accident to have taken place in Lonavala. In fact in recent times, several accidents have been reported from the Pune-Lonavala stretch of the road. In September 2025, 4 students from Pune's Symbiosis International University were involved in a tragic road crash, resulting in the death of two students. Two others were left badly injured in the accident.
In another accident reported from near Lonavala last year, 23 people were injured after a private bus collided with a container truck. This accident happened in October 2024, on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The bus was going from Kolhapur to Borivali in Mumbai when the accident occurred, according to news reports.
