Maharashtra municipal council elections: Here is when the results will be out
The results of the Maharashtra municipal elections will be declared on December 21. The Supreme Court has ordered that there must not be any further delay in declaring the results, no matter what glitches happen on December 20, when the second phase of voting is scheduled. The court also dismissed a petition asking for results of the December 2 elections, to be declared before December 20, when the second phase is scheduled.
New Delhi: Maharashtra saw voting for the local bodies - the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayats on December 2, 2025. The Supreme Court has said that the results of these elections will not be declared immediately, thus upholding the decision of the Nagpur bench of the High Court. The apex court dismissed the petition to declare results immediately after the voting was complete.
Results on December 21
The Supreme Court has ruled that the results of the elections on December 2 and the elections to be held on December 20, will now be announced together on December 21.
The petitioners had demanded that the results of the December 2 elections be declared before the voting for the December 21 election commences. So they wanted the results to be declared by December 20. The court however refused their plea.
The Supreme Court instead upheld the decision given by the Nagpur bench. So now, the counting of votes for both the phases will be done together. The State Election Commission has also been given clear instructions saying that even if there are some technical glitches in voting on December 20, or even if voting is not completed on that day, still the day of results would remain December 21.
This date, the court said, will not be postponed. Given strict instructions from the court, the responsibility of the Commission to conduct elections fairly and declare results on time, has increased manifold.
Court expresses displeasure on election delay
The court had earlier expressed displeasure over the long pending local body elections in the state. In this hearing also they again reminded the Commission about the delay. The apex court once again said that these elections cannot be held 'pending' or be postponed at any cost.
The elections, the court said, were being held 'subject to outcome' and also subject to the final outcome regarding reservation in the future. Nevertheless, the court said that the election process must be completed on time.
Thus the decision of the Supreme Court has made it clear that the results of the municipal elections will now be declared on December 21, not before that day.
