Earlier, the media reports suggested that the incident occurred when the train, travelling from Mumbai's Lokmanya Tilak Terminus to Raxaul in Bihar, passed through Nashik without stopping.

Some media reports attributed to Odha railway station manager Akash informed Nashik Road railway authorities that three passengers had fallen off the train near Hanuman Mandir in Dhikle Nagar, close to Jail Road.

Victims yet to be identified

After this, a team from Nashik Road police station, led by Senior Police Inspector Jitendra Sapkale, reached the spot along with PSI Mali and constable Bhole. The bodies of two men, aged between 30 and 35, were found between kilometre markers 190/1 and 190/3 on the Bhusawal-bound track. A third passenger was found critically injured and was shifted to the district government hospital for treatment.

The victims are yet to be identified.

Even the Police in their initial investigation suspected the passengers may have fallen due to overcrowding in the train amid heavy festive rush ahead of Chhath Puja, when trains to North India typically see high passenger loads.

Massive crowd at Mumbai station

Meanwhile, massive crowds were seen at Mumbai's Lokmanya Tilak Terminus as people in large number prepared to travel home for Diwali and Chhath Puja.

Due to the unavailability of tickets, passengers heading to Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh were forced to travel in general compartments, which were overcrowded and there was barely any space to stand.

Similar scenes were reported at other major railway stations -- including Kurla, CSMT, Bandra, Mumbai Central, Kalyan, and Thane -- where all trains bound for Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh were packed to capacity.
