Raipur: At least 10 Maoists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband district on Thursday, police said.
Among those killed was Central Committee member Manoj alias Modem Balkrishna. The gunfight broke out in the forests under Mainpur police station limits during an anti-Maoist operation.
"Personnel belonging to the Special Task Force (STF), CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action -- an elite unit of CRPF) and other state police units are involved in the operation. Intermittent exchange of fire is still underway," PTI quoted IG Raipur Range Amresh Mishra as saying.
Earlier in the day, 16 Maoists surrendered in Narayanpur district. Officials said all of them were lower-rung cadres associated with different Maoist wings, including the Janatana Sarkar, Chetna Natya Mandli and panchayat militias.
