New Delhi: A luxurious seven-star mansion in Chandigarh has reignited 'sheeshmahal' controversy with the BJP alleging that the AAP-led Punjab government has allotted the lavish bungalow to former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.
The mansion spread across two acres is located in Chandigarh's Sector 2, the BJP alleged, claiming that Kejriwal was allotted the bungalow on the CM quota.
"The man who pretended to be the common man, Kejriwal, has had another grand Sheesh Mahal built," the Delhi unit of the BJP said in a post on X, sharing an aerial photograph of the bungalow.
"After the Delhi 'sheeshmahal' was vacated, Punjab's 'Super Chief Minister' Arvind Kejriwalji has had an even more splendid 'sheeshmahal' built in Punjab...," the party added.
Disgruntled AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal also posted the picture of the mansion on X. Maliwal and AAP leadership have been at loggerheads since May last year after she accused Kejriwal's aide Bibhav Kumar of physically assaulting her.
"After vacating the sheeshmahal in Delhi , Arvind Kejriwal ji has git an even more splendid sheeshmahal built in Punjab than the one in Delhi. In Chandigarh's Sector 2, a luxurious 7-star government mansion of 2 acres under the CM quota has been allotted to Arvind Kejriwal ji," she wrote on X.
The AAP or Kejriwal has not responded to the allegations as yet.
Sheeshmahal controversy
During his tenure as Delhi chief minister, Kejriwal had come under fire over the lavish renovations and installation of high-end appliances of his official residence. The BJP branded the luxurious makeover of the official bungalow as 'sheeshmahal', seeking to blunt AAP's claim that it was a party of the common man. During the February Assembly elections in Delhi, the sheeshmahal controversy was widely seen as one of the key factors behind the Kejriwal's party drubbing.
During the election campaign and even after its victory, the BJP had said that it would turn the bungalow into a 'museum'. "We will include 'sheeshmahal' on the circuit. We will sell tickets and show people," Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had said.
