Nainital: In Uttarakhand, Naini Lake is showing signs of change as its water temperature rises. This warming is helping fish survive and reproduce better than before. But scientists say it is also a warning that climate change is affecting lakes, rivers, and all water life.
According to the experts, fish often find it hard to survive when water is cold. Warm water can speed up their growth, help their eggs hatch faster, and improve their chances of survival.
Local fishermen report more young fish
In Naini Lake, fish are doing better now because of these warmer conditions. Local fishermen report seeing more young fish than earlier. These changes are making fishing easier and better for many people who depend on the lake. More fish mean more food and income for families in the area.
Risks are growing
Even though the current changes seem positive, scientists are worried about what could happen if temperatures continue to rise. Warm water can hold less oxygen. Fish and other water animals need oxygen to live. If oxygen falls too much, many species could suffer or die.
The College of Fisheries at GB Pant University is focusing on managing high-altitude fisheries in Himalayan rivers and lakes. Dr. Awadhesh Kumar, Head of the Department at the College of Fisheries, G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, said the university is focusing on managing high-altitude fisheries. He warned that rising lake temperatures threaten cold-water fish like Mahseer and trout in the Himalayas. He also warned against growth of warm water fishes like Silver Carp and Bighead Carp.
Dr. Kumar explained to TV9(English) that although rising temperatures are a climate concern, they have strangely helped fish survive. In the past, winter water would nearly freeze, killing many fish due to lack of oxygen. Now, warmer waters and oxygen systems have reduced fish deaths in recent years.
It also helps the growth of algae
Another problem is algae. Warm water helps algae grow fast. Too much algae makes water dirty, blocks sunlight, and harms plants that grow under water. That disturbs the balance of the whole lake’s life. Also, changes in water temperature can affect the timing of natural events: when fish breed, when plants bloom, and when insects hatch. These changes can mess up the food chain in the lake.
Broader warning about climate change
Other experts say that what is happening in Naini Lake is not unique. Similar warming is happening in lakes and rivers all over the world. Climate change — caused by rising greenhouse gases — is increasing temperatures. Water bodies are being affected, ecosystems are stressed, and biodiversity is under threat.
In Uttarakhand and other Himalayan regions, rising temperatures can also cause glacier melt, changing water flow, affecting rainfall patterns, and leading to new risks for people living nearby.
What can people do
To protect lakes like Naini Lake, experts suggest doing things like planting more trees around the lake, which helps keep water cool. Reducing pollution is also important because clean water helps fish and other life forms. Monitoring water temperature regularly can also help notice harmful changes early.
People who depend on the lake — fishermen, tourism, local communities — are being asked to support conservation efforts. Helping the government and environment groups can make a difference.
