New Delhi: India is all set to soon launch its third nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), INS Aridhaman, informed Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi on Tuesday. This follows the formal commissioning of INS Arighaat in the strategic forces command in Visakhapatnam in August. This is a major step in strengthening the country's naval power.
India has been planning to commission these submarines for some time now, especially after China's repeated expansion and naval forays into the Indian Ocean Region. With the entry of INS Arindham, India will have 3 operational ballistic missile submarines to guard its sea borders.
INS Arindham is India's third nuclear-powered submarine, which has nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles (called SSBN in naval parlance), and which has a displacement of 7,000-tonne. This will add teeth to India's sea power.
This warship is slightly bigger than the 2 earlier submarines, INS Arihant and INS Arighaat. This submarine will thus be able to carry more K-4 missiles with a strike range of 3,500km.
Talking about the new submarine, which is the country's third indigenously built nuclear-powered vessel, the Navy chief expressed hope that it will enter combat soon. He said that the submarine had entered the final stages of trial. This new submarine will boost India's strike capability and survivability, according to a report in India Today.
The Chief of Naval Staff said, "We have inducted one submarine, INS Vaghsheer, commissioned by the Prime Minister on January 15th during the Tri-ship commissioning event, and 12 warships since the last Navy Day. INS Uday Giri, commissioned by the RM in August at Vizag, was our 100th indigenously designed warship by our own Warship Design Bureau."
