New Delhi: A fresh turn has emerged in the Bareilly wedding breakup case, with the groom alleging that the marriage was called off after he was subjected to body-shaming by the bride’s family, even as the bride’s side maintains that dowry demands were the real reason behind the cancellation.
The incident took place on Friday night in the Cantt police station area of Bareilly when businessman Rishabh Saxena arrived with his wedding procession at a local banquet venue. Wedding arrangements were complete and celebrations were underway when a dispute broke out between the two families shortly before the rituals.
According to the groom, the trouble began around 2 am when he briefly dozed off while sitting on a buggy and later drank water. He alleged that the bride’s family suspected him of being intoxicated and created a scene, despite his insistence that he does not consume alcohol. Rishabh claimed that during the argument, members of the bride’s family mocked him for being overweight and repeatedly made derogatory remarks about his appearance, following which the wedding was called off.
Rishabh Saxena has also accused the bride’s family of misbehaving with his parents and sister, alleging verbal abuse, physical assault and the forcible removal of jewellery worn by his mother and sister. He further claimed that he is now being pressured to pay Rs 20 lakh and transfer a house in Sanjay Nagar in order to reach a settlement, failing which his family has been threatened with false dowry cases.
The bride’s family, however, has rejected these allegations. They have accused the groom of demanding Rs 20 lakh and a Brezza car just before the wedding rituals, prompting them to refuse to proceed with the marriage. Based on a complaint filed by the bride’s father, an FIR has been registered at Cantt police station against Rishabh Saxena and seven members of his family under dowry-related sections.
Police officials said they are investigating the matter and will record statements from both sides. “Both parties have levelled serious allegations. The facts will be verified during the probe and further action will be taken accordingly,” a senior police officer said. As of now, the groom has not submitted a written complaint to the police.
