New Delhi: A wedding ceremony in Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor came to an abrupt halt after the presiding Imam refused to solemnise the nikah upon discovering that the groom was 45 years old and the bride only 15. The sudden announcement stunned everyone present, triggering chaos and forcing the groom’s procession to return without the marriage taking place.
The incident occurred in Mohalla Bakshiwala, where a 25-member wedding procession had arrived from Syohara. Locals reportedly grew suspicious when a man from the groom’s side kept pressuring the family to conduct the nikah immediately, even before the guests were served food. As murmurs spread, the Imam reached the venue to begin the formalities.
During verification, the Imam learned that the groom was significantly older. When he asked for the bride’s Aadhaar card, it confirmed she was a minor. Citing both legal and religious grounds, he immediately refused to perform the nikah and advised the girl’s family against proceeding with a child marriage.
Members of the groom’s side protested, but the Imam stood firm. Eventually, the procession had no option but to leave. According to reports, the groom had been married twice earlier and both wives had left him before he attempted this third marriage.
