No Road, No Wedding Bells: Over 50 youths unmarried in Nainital village over lack of connectivity
Over 50 youths are unmarried in a village close to Uttarakhand's popular hill station Nainital due to the poor connectivity, lacking basic infrastructure. People are not willing for the marital ties with the girls and boys in this village because it needs a five km trekking on the muddy roads.
Nainital: In the present era, when India is touching new heights with advanced developments in science and technology every day, there is a village in Uttarakhand’s Nainital district where over 50 youths are unmarried because they don’t have access to their village through a proper road.
Due to the lack of road to the Garykhet village, people in other villages are not interested in tying the knot with the girls and boys living in this village. Troubled by this problem, villagers are now demanding road construction from the administration. Moreover, due to lack of roads, migration and social problems are increasing in the village.
No road, no hospital, no school and no means of employment here
Garikhet village, located just 5 kilometers from the popular tourist town of Nainital, lacks basic infrastructure. To reach the village, one has to walk through muddy and hilly paths. Because of this, families from outside do not want to marry their sons or daughters into the village.
After so many years of independence, this village is still deprived of basic infrastructure. Garikhet also has no hospital, no school, and no jobs. If someone falls sick, they have to be carried to Nainital in a palanquin. Even ambulances cannot reach the village. Villagers say that since independence, not a single proper road has been built.
Marriage proposals are being rejected over poor connectivity
The villagers say that many marriage proposals come, but they are rejected once people see the poor condition of the village. Hema, a 30-year-old resident, said in a News 18 video, "I received many proposals, but they were canceled after the boy’s family visited. They don’t want to marry into a village where no vehicle can reach.” Deepika, another local, added, "There are more than 20 girls and 30 boys here who are ready for marriage, but no one wants to come here or take someone from here. The only reason is the lack of a road.”
A major reason of migration in the village
This lack of connectivity is not just affecting marriages—it is also causing people to leave the village. Young people are moving to cities in search of a better future. Dheeraj, a local youth, said, "Until a road is built, no one will marry their daughter here. This is not just about marriage—it’s about the future of our village. There are no jobs, and our youth are growing older without opportunities.”
Villagers appeal to the government to build a road
The villagers have appealed to the government to build a proper road to Garikhet. They believe that once the road is built, life will improve, and the youth will have a chance at a better future.
