Probe takes a surprising turn
The dead body of Elena Kasthanova was found in a rented room in Goa's Arambol, and the police on Friday arrested her live-in partner, Aleksei Leonov (37), for her murder. In a surprising turn of events, the Russian tourist allegedly confessed to more murders during interrogation on Saturday.
Accused leads police to more dead bodies
He reportedly led police officials to the location of another woman's body, a certain 37-year-old Elena Vaneeva, in Morjim village. According to the police, she was murdered on the night of January 14, and Leonov also allegedly confessed to another murder, that of a 40-year-old woman from Assam.
Police checking veracity of his claims
The Hindustan Times has quoted a Goa police officer in its report who said that, during the probe, the accused informed that he had killed those two women and more. The police are verifying his claims, as Leonov also led them to Korgao village, where he claimed to have killed another woman by drugging her.
Notably, on January 14, a suspected overdose case was reported at Goa's Pernem Community Health Centre. The police are yet to ascertain the veracity of his statements and are not ruling out the possibility of him being under the influence of "psychotropic substances".
