The school is focused on studying drone usage patterns by various countries, including Pakistan, Iran, China, Israel, Ukraine, and Russia, over the past two to three decades.

The BSF’s training curriculum has been updated by making drone warfare a compulsory subject for everyone, from officers to jawans, during their regular training as well.

New Delhi: The Border Security Force’s (BSF) newly launched School of Drone Warfare is set to transform India’s strategy for future conflicts along the border. It will train drone warriors and drone commandos in mission mode to strengthen the nation’s ability to address aerial threats.

The initiative follows Operation Sindoor, aimed at enhancing India’s tactical and technological capacity to counter new-age warfare. The facility is training BSF personnel in various aspects of drone operations, including piloting, surveillance and reconnaissance, tracking, jamming, neutralising hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), AI-based tracking, and deploying explosive payloads on enemy targets during conflicts.

BSF Director General (DG) Daljit Chawdhary inaugurated the Officer’s Academy in Tekanpur, near Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, on September 2. The school aims to train at least 500 drone commandos and warriors(across 10–12 batches) each year. According to the Hindustan Times, BSF is also creating “drone squadrons” along the western border.

The first batch of 42 drone warriors has already completed its training course at the school and returned to their respective battalions on the India-Pakistan border, where they will further educate their subordinates. A batch of drone commandos is currently undergoing an eight-week training program at the facility.

“As we witnessed during Operation Sindoor, the threat has evolved from boots on the ground to drones. The School of Drone Warfare is an apt response to this threat. We are training soldiers who will manage all operations on the ground as drone commandos, and officers who will plan and execute the strategy as drone warriors,” HT quoted BSF Academy Director Shamsher Singh as saying.

Mandatory training for everyone

Singh also stated that the BSF’s training curriculum has been updated by making drone warfare a compulsory subject for everyone, from officers to jawans, during their regular training as well.

The school, which received initial funding of Rs 20 crore, is equipped with simulators, live drone flying zones, facilities for payload integration in UAVs, night operation capabilities, tools for radio frequency (RF) jamming and kinetic interception, as well as integrated hardware and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.

The school is also focused on studying drone usage patterns by various countries, including Pakistan, Iran, China, Israel, Ukraine, and Russia, over the past two to three decades.
