Phone off, house locked: Punjab couple flees village after winning Rs 1.5 crore lottery fearing robbery

New Delhi: What would anyone do after winning a lottery of Rs 1.5 crore -- Huge celebration, right?. However, this was not the case for a family in Punjab's Faridkot district as they left their village soon after winning a bumper prize money in the Punjab State Lottery.

Couple went into hiding

Word spread in the neighbourhood, as soon as the couple won the lottery. Fearing criminals could extort money from them, the couple locked their house and left the village. They also switched off their mobile phones and shifted to an undisclosed location, fearing extortion threats.

Neighbours alerted police

When the neighbours noticed that the family was missing, they alerted the police. Later, a police team located them and convinced them to return to their village by reassuring their safety and protection. The couple, along with their son came back to their home on Wednesday. 

Faridkot deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Tarlochan Singh said that police are committed to the safety of everyone and that a team visited the family, who won the lottery and convinced them to return to their home. 

"We were informed about a woman and her husband winning a lottery worth Rs 1.5 crore. The family expressed apprehension that some miscreants could harass them and demand ransom after coming to know about their sudden fortune. We reached out to them and assured them that police will ensure that they are safe and no one harms them. Police are always their for the safety of the public," the DSP said.
