New Delhi: The Delhi Police foiled an alleged plot to kill stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqi and arrested two members of the Rohit Godara-Goldy Brar-Virender Charan gang. The duo were held after an intense gunfight on Jaitpur-Kalindi Kunj Road on Thursday, police said. According to sources, the gangsters hatched a plot to kill Faruqi as they find his jokes disrespectful to Hindu gods.
The accused identified as Rahul and Sahil hail from Panipat and Bhiwani of Haryana, according to police. The two had planned to kill Faruqi on the instructions of foreign-based gangster Rohit Godara, who was working with Goldy Brar and Virender Charan, a probe revealed.
Shooters did recce of Munawar Faruqi in Mumbai, Bengaluru
The two accused had also conducted recce of Faruqi in Mumbai and Bengaluru before coming to Delhi and were keeping a close watch on the movements of the stand-up comedian. According to reports, the shooters had planned to kill him after an event in Bengaluru but their plan failed.
The shooters, who were on a motorcycle were stopped by police near Pushta Road around 3 am. However, they fired at cops and tried to flee. The police shot at them in the leg after they tried to run away, before taking them into custody.
Rahul suffered a gunshot wound, and was taken to a hospital for treatment. He is wanted in connection with a triple murder that took place in Yamunanagar, Haryana, in December 2024, according to an officer. Police seized the weapons used in the encounter and a motorbike from the two accused.
Munawar Faruqi is a stand-up comedian with over 14 million followers on Instagram. He was the winner of reality show Bigg Boss in 2024. The 33-year-old comedian had earlier sparked an outrage over his jokes on Hindu deities. He was arrested in Madhya Pradesh in 2021 under the law against hate speech and remained in jail for over a month. Last year, he was detained following a raid by Mumbai Police on an illegal hookah bar. He was later granted bail.
