Over 250 dead in Manipur violence

According to The Hindu, the Manipur visit may coincide with Prime Minister Modi's tour of Mizoram and Assam from September 12-14, where he is scheduled to inaugurate railway and other infrastructure projects.

The violence in Manipur has claimed over 250 lives and forced thousands into relief camps. The state has been under President's Rule since February 2025, which was extended for another six months in August. The security situation has improved since and around 3,000 looted weapons have been recovered by the security forces.

Unrest over ST status for Meitei

The unrest began after protests by the Kuki community opposing the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for the Meitei community. The clashes escalated, prompting the Centre to deploy large numbers of security forces. Union home minister Amit Shah also visited the state and announced peace measures, though sporadic violence has continued.

The President's Rule was imposed after chief minister N Biren Singh resigned amid increased scrutiny by opposition parties over his handling of the violence. The PM's visit comes amid continued opposition charge of him "neglecting Manipur", a charge denied by the BJP government at the Centre.
