PM Modi meets world leaders at SCO summit, stresses friendship, trade and cultural ties

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday emphasised India's commitment to strengthening friendship, trade and cultural linkages as he engaged with global leaders at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit reception.

The official reception for the Heads of State and Government was hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping and First Lady Peng Liyuan. Modi, on his arrival, exchanged greetings with Xi before joining Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders for the customary family photograph.

During the evening, Modi met with several leaders and reiterated India's longstanding ties across South Asia, Central Asia and beyond. With Nepali Prime Minister KP Oli, Modi highlighted the deep-rooted cultural and historical relationship between two nations. "India’s relations with Nepal are very special,” he later posted on X.

Modi also held discussions with Maldivian President Mohammed Muizzu. Despite the recent strain in the relations between the two nations, Modi said that India's developmental cooperation with the Maldives continues to be "greatly beneficial for our people." In a meeting with Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Modi said that bilateral friendship was "scaling newer heights."

Modi also met the Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and highlighted various opportunities for cooperation. "We are very optimistic about the beneficial opportunities ahead,” he remarked in the X post.

Modi described his interaction with Tajikistan's President Emomali Rahmon as "a wonderful sign" for future cooperation. With Kazakasthan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Modi discussed collaboration in areas such as energy, security, healthcare and pharmaceuticals.
