Protests erupt at NSS headquarters demanding resignation of Sukumaran Nair

The protest comes in the wake of the community organisation's decision to extend support to the Left Democratic Front government in organising the Global Ayyappa Sangamam last month, which had triggered dissent within the Nair community at the grassroots level.

Perunna: Massive protests erupted at the NSS (Nair Service Society) headquarters in Perunna by various when different ‘Karayogms’ (NSS units) took out padayatra’s and marches demanding the resignation of NSS secretary Sukumaran Nair.

NSS leaders who took part in the protest march that started from Aluva in Ernakulam raised slogans against the current NSS leadership lead by Sukumaran Nair and his family members who is under allegations of nepotism charges and corruption.

Around 200 people participated in the march, which was stopped by the police near NSS Hindu College. When the authorities denied the protesters’ request to offer floral tributes at the Mannathu Padmanabhan memorial located inside the NSS headquarters, they performed the ritual on the road in front of the community leader’s portrait.

The protest comes in the wake of the community organisation’s decision to extend support to the Left Democratic Front government in organising the Global Ayyappa Sangamam last month, which had triggered dissent within the Nair community at the grassroots level.

The NSS, however, has remained unfazed and described the mounting criticism against Mr. Nair as ‘deliberate attempts’ to malign the organisation for its firm stance in safeguarding the religious beliefs of Hindus.

The demand for Sukumaran Nair’s resignation has been gaining momentum ever since the ‘Ayyappa Sangamam’ conducted by the LDF government at Pamba.

“The current leadership is subservient to the LDF government and the CPI(M). There is a lot of corruption that is involved where the current leadership of NSS is involved. Senior ministers of the CPM government is helping these members. The Ayyappa conclave that was held in Pamba was supported by the senior leaders of NSS to whitewash the corruption. We have decided to hold further protests in the coming days to expose the wrongdoings of the current secretary”, said Karmasamiti leader Mukkappuzha Nandakumar.

The current leadership of NSS under Sukumaran Nair is also trying to take control of the 'Karayogam' units as the leadership feels that RSS-BJP affiliated members have become powerful in many such units in districts like Alappuzha, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Trivandrum.
