New Delhi: In a shocking incident reported from Punjab's Ludhiana, the body of a 30-year-old man was found cut into pieces and scattered in a field. The head of the man was severed and was discovered inside a white-coloured drum. The body was discovered inside a vacant plot near Jalandhar Bypass.

The deceased was identified as Davinder, who hailed from Bhora village. He used to work in a digital printing press in Mumbai. According to his family, he had come to Ludhiana on January 6 to purchase some digital printing machines. On that day, after reaching home, he told his family members that he was going to meet a friend and left the house.

The man then reportedly went to see his friend, but failed to return home for hours. It was then that his family started a search for him, but failed to locate the man. They then approached the police and filed a missing person complaint at the Salem Tabri police station.

On Thursday morning, some ragpickers discovered a white-coloured drum in a field. One of them reportedly wanted to take it with him and decided to open and peep inside. He was horrified to find a human head inside the drum.

The Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP-I) Sameer Verma was quoted as saying, "The man's head was stuffed in a white-coloured drum. Other body parts including hands, legs and part of the abdomen were found scattered around in the field, around 500 metres from where the drum was discovered. There were also burn marks on the body, which indicates that the accused might have tried to burn the body."

The police began scanning CCTV footage of the area and traced the path that the victim took after leaving home on that fateful day. They found that Davinder left home and entered the house of his friend, Shamsher Singh Shera. Hours later, Shera and his wife were seen carrying the same drum in which Davinder's head was discovered. They reportedly returned and then made several more trips on their 2-wheeler.

Following the discovery of the CCTV footage, the police booked Shera and his wife Kuldeep Kaur for murder. Both of them are currently absconding. Their house was found locked and the 2 were absconding. A hunt has been launched to nab the duo.

Drug-related payment dispute might have led to crime: Family

According to Davinder's family, after he went missing, they had approached the accused, Shera asking for his whereabouts. On a call, Shera told them that Davinder had come to his house, asking to borrow his bike, but he had reportedly refused to lend it to him. The man claimed that after this, Davinder left. The family said that they believed this version, but later went to check personally with the man. They found that Shera's house was locked.

The family said that CCTV footage scanned by the police, which they had also seen, showed Davinder entering Shera's house at 2:45 pm, but there was no footage to show him coming out. In fact the next footage showed Shera and his wife coming out of their house at around midnight, with the same drum in which the head of the man was later found.

The family suspects that some monetary dispute between the 2 friends might have led to the murder. They claimed that Shera, who works as a carpenter, is also a drug peddler. Davinder also occasionally consumes drugs and buys it from Shera. The family suspects that there might have been some altercation between the 2 over payments for the drugs and this might have led to the killing.

Davinder is survived by his wife and a 7-month-old daughter.
