New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and shared insights from his recent meeting with United States President Donald Trump in Alaska.

PM Modi later posted about the call on social media platform X, writing: "Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska. India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come."

Putin-Trump meeting in Alaska

Putin and Trump met on August 15 at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Alaska. While the talks did not produce the ceasefire that many had hoped for, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff told CNN that Russia had agreed to allow the US and Europe to extend "robust" security guarantees to Ukraine as part of a potential peace deal.

According to Witkoff, it was agreed at the summit that the US and Europe could "effectively offer Article 5-like language to cover a security guarantee", referring to NATO's principle that an attack on one member is considered an attack on all.

Alaska meeting and implications for India

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the US security guarantee proposal as "historic" ahead of his talks with Trump and European leaders later today in Washington.

The Alaska meeting also drew close attention in India, as Trump earlier this month imposed an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods in response to New Delhi's purchase of discounted Russian crude. A favourable outcome at the summit, Indian officials hoped, might have paved the way for easing trade tensions. Instead, from August 27, tariffs on Indian exports to the US will double to 50 per cent.
