New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha has asked the central government to provide free access to advanced generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and Claude, to all Indians. He emphasised the fact that AI could play a transformative role in the country's growth and digital empowerment.
He raised this matter in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Chadha described AI as more than just technology. He called it “an opportunity to have dreams and achieve them.” He said AI could serve as a smart assistant across diverse sectors, from agriculture and education to healthcare and business.
“For our farmers, AI can help in smart farming. It can act as a 24×7 tutor for our students, a business planner for our traders, a career guide for our youth and also a doctor for our elderly,” Chadha said. “AI has the answers for all your problems.”
The AAP MP also said that countries like the UAE, Singapore and China were already offering free or subsidised access to advanced AI platforms for their citizens. By contrast, in India, he said, such tools remain largely out of reach due to high subscription costs.
Chadha also said that ensuring universal access to AI would prepare India for 2030, when the global AI-driven economy is expected to be worth $15 trillion. “If India provides free subscription of advanced generative AI tools to all Indians of all ages and social strata in all languages, it can improve the country’s productivity and save valuable time,” he said, calling the proposal a step towards “digital democracy.”
He also stressed that AI could significantly ease day-to-day tasks such as coding, studying data analytics or even filling up routine forms. “The government should look into the matter so that no Indian is left behind,” he added.
Currently, many advanced AI platforms in India require premium subscriptions to be used at full capacity. OpenAI recently launched its new ChatGPT Go plan in India, priced at Rs 399 per month. The standard ChatGPT Plus plan continues to cost Rs 1,999 per month.
