New Delhi: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has written a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge over multiple security lapses linked to Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. Mr Gandhi falls under the VVIP security category, but concerns have been raised about his repeated violations of protocol.

In a letter dated September 10, Sunil Joon, head of CRPF's VVIP Security division, accused Rahul Gandhi of not taking his own security seriously and failing to comply with prescribed security measures.

The officer noted that Mr Gandhi, who is protected under the Z+ with ASL security category, has repeatedly flouted the rules laid down under the CRPF's "Yellow Book" protocol. The violations include travelling abroad without informing the security agency in advance.

As per protocol, VVIPs with Z+ ASL security are required to notify their security agency at least 15 days prior to any foreign visit. However, Mr Gandhi allegedly did not follow this rule on several occasions.

According to the CRPF, in the past nine months, Gandhi has undertaken six foreign trips without informing the security agency, creating operational challenges.

Six trips cited by the CRPF

  • Italy (December 30, 2024 – January 9, 2025) for New Year celebrations (10–11 days)
  • Vietnam (March 12-17, 2025)
  • Dubai (April 17–23, 2025)
  • Doha, Qatar (June 11–18, 2025)
  • London (June 25 – July 6 2025)
  • Malaysia (September 4–8, 2025)

In its letter, the CRPF has urged both Kharge and Rahul Gandhi to ensure strict adherence to security protocols in the future.
