Guwahati: Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, who was brutally murdered during his honeymoon in Meghalaya, was remembered on Thursday with a solemn prayer ceremony held by his grieving family at the very spot where the crime occurred. The rituals were conducted at a secluded parking area near Weisawdong Falls in Sohra, the same location where Raja was killed on May 23.
His elder brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, travelled to the site to perform the last rites and offer prayers according to Hindu traditions. "We wanted to be here, at the place where our Raja took his last breath. No family should have to do this, but it was necessary for us," said an emotional Vipin after the ceremony.
Raja had gone missing along with his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi on May 23 while they were on their honeymoon. Ten days later, his mutilated body was discovered in a 30-foot gorge. Police said he had been attacked with machetes and left to die. Investigators allege that Raja’s wife Sonam had conspired with her lover, Raj Kushwaha, and three other men from Indore to kill him. The accused reportedly lured Raja to the remote location under the guise of sightseeing and then hacked him to death with two machetes—one of which was later recovered from the forest.
Sonam initially fled but was eventually handed over to police in Uttar Pradesh. She, along with Raj and the other three accused, are currently in judicial custody. "We want speedy justice. The people who plotted and carried out this horrific act must be punished," Vipin added.
