New Delhi: Actor Ranya Rao's father K Ramachandra Rao has been reappointed Director General of Police (DGP) after being sent on leave. He was forced to go on leave after his daughter was caught smuggling gold and was sent to jail.
The government has reappointed Rao as the DGP after he was sent on compulsory leave. The leave was seen as an action taken against the government official after his daughter was caught smuggling gold into the country. She was arrested from Bengaluru Airport.
Rao had however vehemently denied having any knowledge about Ranya's doings. Following his reinstatement he has been appointed as DGP (DCRE). Before going on leave, Rao was the Director-General of Police (Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation).
Ranya Rao is the stepdaughter of the DGP.
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested Ranya Rao from Bengaluru airport in March this year. She was in possession of 14.8 kg of gold. The actor came to Bengaluru from Dubai on an Emirates flight.
According to reports at the time, officials noticed that Ranya was wearing a lot of gold and had also concealed a significant amount of it in her clothing. Reports also said that 2 of her accomplices were carrying gold bars in briefcases.
Ranya Rao reportedly made 4 trips to Dubai in 15 days and the authorities were tracking her movement. When she returned from the fourth trip, officials sprang into action and arrested her.
