New Delhi: An engineering student, aged 20, pursuing her B.Tech in a University in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh district allegedly died by suicide late Saturday night. She took her own life in her hostel room.
The girl has been identified as Princy Kumari, a resident of Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. She was a second-year B.Tech student in Computer Science and was residing in the university hostel near Punjipathra.
She hanged herself in her hostel room
Police said that the student allegedly died by suicide after hanging herself in her hostel room. Her suicide came to light when authorities of the hostel were informed. Police rushed to the spot, carried out inquest proceedings, and sent the body for a post-mortem examination. Later, the body was handed over to her family members.
Initial reports suggested that the student was facing academic pressure. She reportedly had to take her second-year exams in addition to first-year backlog papers. Police have found a suicide note from her hostel room. They are reviewing its contents as part of the probe.
Police pointed out that the precise cause of death will be ascertained only after the post-mortem examination. They are also recording statements from hostel residents and university employees.
Sources said that Princy’s family had tried calling her several times around 8.30 pm on Saturday. However, she did not take the calls. Concerned, they contacted the hostel warden. When the warden arrived, the room was locked from the inside. Even though the warden knocked several times, there was no response. Peering through a window, the warden reportedly saw the student hanging.
What did the suicide note say
Police said they recovered a suicide note from the room. As per the police, the note said that the student expressed that she was unable to live up to her parents’ expectations and was perturbed over her academic performance and the financial stress on her family.
In the suicide note, the girl reportedly said: ‘Sorry Mummy Papa, I couldn’t meet your expectations." She also felt guilty for using their savings for her education.
Family members pointed out that Princy had backlogs in five subjects from her first semester and was making preparations for the re-examinations. They also mentioned that she had recently requested around Rs 1 lakh in instalments for her semester fees.
