'Stray dog order made me famous across the world': Supreme Court judge Vikram Nath

Justice Vikram Nath of the Supreme Court who passed the order to vaccinate and sterilise dogs of Delhi and then release them from the shelters thanked Chief Justice BR Gavai for assigning him the case. He said that after passing the order on the stray dogs, he was receiving several congratulatory messages from dog lovers. He jokingly added that probably even the stray dogs were blessing him.

New Delhi: Supreme Court justice Vikram Nath said that the order passed on "stray dogs" in Delhi-NCR made him famous across the world. The senior judge of the apex court is widely known for his light-hearted banter, both inside and outside the courtroom.

A special 3-judge bench, headed by Justice Nath had modified the ruling on permanent removal of stray dogs from the streets of Delhi. The bench modified the 2-judge order passed earlier which said that stray dogs captured by the municipalities should not be released back and that they should be kept in shelters.

While speaking at the National Legal Service Authority (NALSA) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Justice Vikram Nath said that he was grateful to Chief Justice of India, BR Gavai for assigning him the case. He then went on to thank the stray dogs of the country, whom he credited for making him famous.

NDTV quoted Nath as saying, "For a long time, I have been known in the legal fraternity for my odd jobs, but I am also grateful to stray dogs for giving me recognition not only in this country but in the entire civil society across the world."

He said that at a recent event, lawyers, including the President of the lawyers' association asked him questions about the stray dog issue. He said that ever since the ruling, he had been receiving messages that apart from the dog lovers, dogs are also giving him blessings and best wishes.

Supreme Court order on stray dogs

The Supreme Court bench led by Justice Nath modified an earlier order on stray dogs. They said that these animals can be sterilised, vaccinated and released back into the same area from where they were picked up.

The order had sent a wave of joy across animal lovers in Delhi and also across the nation. The bench which passed the order also comprised Justices Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria. The bench described the August 11 order which called for all stray dogs to be removed from the streets of Delhi as "too harsh".
