Tamil Nadu to gain most from India–UK free trade agreement, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Modi laid foundation stones and inaugurated projects worth Rs 4,800 crore in Thoothukudi, highlighting Tamil Nadu's role in India's development. He said the India–UK Free Trade Agreement will boost Tamil Nadu's MSMEs, youth, and economy, bringing India closer to becoming the world's third-largest economy.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, and launched development projects worth Rs 4,800 crore. He addressed a large gathering and spoke about the benefits of the India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), the cultural bond between Tamil Nadu and Kashi, and the government’s focus on infrastructure and clean energy.

Speaking at the event, PM Modi said that the India–UK FTA will help small businesses, MSMEs, start-ups, and especially the youth of Tamil Nadu. He mentioned that after the FTA, 99% of Indian products sold in Britain will become tax-free, making Indian goods cheaper and more competitive. This will boost demand in the UK market and support the growth of Indian industries.

Highlighting his government’s vision, PM Modi said, “Today, we are moving forward with the dream of a developed Tamil Nadu and a developed India. The India–Britain FTA will give new strength to the economy and help us become the third-largest economy in the world.”

He also remembered Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathiyar, who was born in Tamil Nadu and had a deep connection with Kashi, the Prime Minister’s parliamentary constituency. PM Modi said efforts like the Kashi-Tamil Sangamam are helping to strengthen the shared cultural roots of both regions.

PM Modi further said that infrastructure and energy are the backbone of a state's growth. He spoke about several development projects already launched in Thoothukudi, including the Outer Harbour Container Terminal at VO Chidambaranar Port. These initiatives aim to make the region a hub for connectivity, clean energy, and new opportunities.

During the event, he also paid tribute to Kargil Vijay Diwas, saluting the bravery and sacrifice of the Indian soldiers. He said it was a blessing to return to India on this important day after a four-day foreign tour, during which the FTA agreement with Britain was signed.

PM Modi said, “This is a symbol of the world’s growing trust in India and India’s new self-confidence. With this confidence, we will build a developed India and a developed Tamil Nadu.” He also invoked the blessings of Lord Rameshwar and Thiruchendur Murugan for the state’s progress.
