New Delhi: A new, chilling close-up video has emerged capturing the final moments before the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA Mk-1) crashed during an aerobatic display at the Dubai Airshow on Friday, killing Indian Air Force pilot Wing Commander Namansh Syal.

The footage shows the aircraft executing sharp turns at a low altitude before abruptly dropping and crashing, triggering a massive explosion followed by thick smoke and flames billowing from the impact site. The jet was performing a stunt routine on the concluding day of the international aviation event when disaster struck.

Wing Commander Syal, 37, was known among peers for his exceptional flying capabilities and passion for high-precision aerobatics. He was operating the indigenously developed fighter aircraft as part of India’s showcase at the airshow.

Another video emerges

A separate video surfaced earlier, showing Wing Commander Syal interacting with dignitaries at the event prior to the crash. He appeared alongside Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, India’s Ambassador to the UAE Deepak Mittal, and Additional Secretary (Gulf) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Aseem R. Mahajan. The exact time of the video recording remains unclear. The Dubai Airshow commenced on November 17 and was scheduled to end on November 21.

Hailing from Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, Wing Commander Syal leaves behind his wife—also an officer in the Indian Air Force—their six-year-old daughter, and his parents.

Cause under investigation

Defence expert Captain Anil Gaur (Retd.) said the crash may have resulted from a potential loss of control or a blackout induced by high gravitational pressure during the manoeuvre. However, he stressed that definitive reasons would only be known once technical data is fully examined.

“Pilots wear a G-suit so that the blood does not pool in their legs; there might have been an issue with that. What exactly happened can only be determined once the cockpit data is retrieved. I express my condolences to the family of the pilot,” ANI news agency quoted Gaur as saying.

An official investigation is currently underway.
