Nagarjuna Sagar dam gates lifted in July after 18 years

Fourteen crest gates of Nagarjuna Sagar dam were lifted and water was released downstream on Tuesday. It is for the first time that crest gates were lifted in July in 18 years, reports said.

Huge inflows from Srisailam dam after heavy rains in upstream Karnataka and Maharashtra, almost filled the dam early this year. The current capacity of the project has now reached 586.60 feet out of the full water level of 590.00 feet. The full water storage capacity is at 312.0450 TMC and the current capacity stands at 305.8580 TMC.

 In the wake of the lifting of the project gates, officials have issued warnings to people in low-lying areas to be vigilant.

Ministers Uttam Kumar Reddy, Adluri Laxman and other top government officials participated in the lifting of the gates.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Uttam said that he was very happy to see the gates of Sagar being lifted. "Nagarjuna Sagar is a modern temple for us. Nehru laid the foundation of Sagar, while Indira Gandhi started it. This is a great project that will provide water to 26 lakh acres," he said.
