Sankranti traffic advisory: Diversions issued for travel on Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway

Authorities expect traffic to build up from Friday evening, with January 10 being a second Saturday.

Hyderabad-Vijayawada National Highway (NH-65), one of the busiest corridors, will likely see heavy traffic surge due to the upcoming Sankranti festival as people are set to travel from Hyderabad to various parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Officials have issued an advisory asking motorists to be cautious while traveling on NH-65. Ongoing construction work at several locations on the stretch of the highway has increased the risk of congestion and accidents as traffic rush is expected to peak.

Construction work and expected bottle necks:

A stretch between Choutuppal mandal and Nandigama in AP has been identified as sensitive, with 17 black spots. Police said that active construction is underway on one flyover, 13 underpasses and service roads at 10 locations. Negligence in these stretches could result in accidents.

Traffic diversions are as follows:

Vehicles going from Hyderabad to Guntur will be diverted at Narkatpally via Nalgonda, Miryalaguda, and Piduguralla.

Rajahmundry-Visakhapatnam: Vehicles will be diverted via Nakirekal, Arvapalli, Maripeda Bangla, and Khammam. If there are issues on these routes, vehicles will be diverted to Tekumatla towards Rajahmundry via Khammam national highway.

Hyderabad-Vijayawada: Tekumatla diversion will be lifted temporarily while vehicles previously had to go from Tekumatla to Khammam national highway, take a U-turn, and return towards Suryapet, a temporary road has been constructed to allow vehicles to travel directly on the national highway.

Khammam-Hyderabad: Instead of having to go towards Rayinigudem and take a U-turn, plans have been made to divert traffic at Chivvemla and Ailapuram, allowing vehicles to travel directly to Hyderabad via Suryapet.

Drone camera surveillance:

Suryapet district police will use drone cameras to monitor the national highway this year. If a large number of vehicles get stuck anywhere, appropriate action will be taken immediately. Staff are expected to continuously monitor traffic for five days before and after the festival. Cranes, ambulances, and towing vehicles have been kept ready.

At the black spots:

24 black spots have been identified across Suryapet. CCTV cameras, signboards, and streetlights have been installed and  speed ​​breakers, barricades have been removed. Motorists must adhere to traffic rules and speed limits, Suryapet Superintendent of Police K Narasimha said. 

Satellite based toll collection trial at Pantangi Plaza:

To reduce waiting times at toll plazas, NHAI has conducted satellite-based toll collection trial on Thursday. Minor errors were found in the trial and work is being done to rectify them, officials said.
