Hyderabad: Telangana State Election Commission (SEC) has temporarily halted local body election process after the High Court issued an order staying the 42 percent BC quota on Thursday.
In a notification halting the elections, the SEC said that the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is in abeyance with immediate effect, until further notice.
The SEC called upon registered voters in all Gram Panchayats that in pursuance of the high court directions in 9.10.2025 the MCC and all other process and proceedings pursuant to the election notification dated 29.9.2025 will be suspended and will remain suspended until further notification.
The move to temporarily halt the poll process came on Thursday night, hours after the SEC issued notification for MPTC, ZPTC elections.
MPTC and ZPTC polls were supposed to be held in the first two phases, while Gram Panchayat elections were to be held in the remaining three phases.
After hearing extensive arguments, the high court on Thursday stayed government order (GO) number 9, which facilitated 42 percent reservation for Backward Classes.
The petitioners’ counsel argued that the constitution says that reservations should not exceed 50 percent but the total has reached 67 percent with the 42 percent reservation given by the government to BCs.
